What is Data Communication?

A basic definition of communication is the transfer of data from one computer to another through the internet or another medium. Information can range from a click to read more simple audio file to the form of a text message. The data can be sent wirelessly or through wired medium. In order for two computers to communicate with one the other, they require a method of linking together that is known as a network or channel.

Modern networks for data communications employ a variety of data transmission channels. There are three types of data transmission channels: simplex, full-duplex, and duplex. Simplex mode permits information to flow only in one direction, whereas duplex mode allows the transmitter and receiver to transmit simultaneously. Full-duplex is similar to duplex however, it requires that both the receiver and the transmitter be at a synchronized state to read binary data bits in the signal being transmitted.

The information that is transmitted via a data communication channel can either be digital messages sent by a microprocessor, or an analog signal (such as a video or telephone call) that is digitalized by using pulse-code modulation. Any errors in the transmission of data must be spotted and corrected to ensure that only the correct information is received by the receiver at the other end. This is usually done using a combination sequence numbers and acknowledgement codes.
